Job Summary

In this critical role, you will assume shift responsibilities for the care delivery team, coordinating the provision of care through assigning and scheduling staff, prioritizing, delegating, and evaluating patient care. You will work closely with the interdisciplinary team to problem-solve system and unit-based issues, providing input into nursing staff performance appraisals and assisting with staff educational requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead and Resource Person: Function as a lead and resource person for nursing personnel, acting as a clinical resource person and assisting the clinical manager in planning and facilitating staff meetings and staff development.
  2. Staffing and Scheduling: Collaborate with the manager in prospective monitoring of the schedule to ensure adequate nurse-patient ratio on a given shift, reviewing monthly schedules and communicating with the staffing office regarding staffing changes.
  3. Shared Decision Making: Facilitate shared decision making among staff, facilitating unit throughput on a given shift to improve Length of Stay (LOS).
  4. Staff Development: Coordinate and provide in-service programs to assist staff in maintaining or enhancing their competence in fulfilling job responsibilities based on identified needs of patient care personnel.
  5. Staff Management: May assist the manager with interview, selection, retention, mentoring, and evaluation of staff.
  6. Policies and Procedures: Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and standards for the department.
  7. Process Improvement: Assist with department Process Improvement and Peer Review.
Qualifications
  1. Education: Associates Degree/Diploma required, BSN preferred.
  2. Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse by the state of Michigan.
  3. Experience: One to two years of progressively more responsible experience with evidence of increasing leadership abilities.
  4. Skills: Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, delegate to others, and facilitate processes.
  5. Performance Criteria: Minimum Level 6 of the Promoting Excellence Performance Criteria, if an internal candidate, preferred.
  6. Certifications: BLS required, ACLS preferred.
