Job Overview

Position Summary

Under the general oversight of the Water and Wastewater Superintendent, the Water Distribution Operator is tasked with the management, upkeep, construction, and repair of the municipal water distribution infrastructure. The role involves operating heavy machinery such as backhoes and excavators for the installation and maintenance of water lines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistent and punctual attendance; be physically present at work.
  • Perform after-hours duties as necessary, including nights and weekends.
  • Assist with emergency response efforts as required by municipal authorities.
  • Address and repair water and sewer leaks as needed.
  • Utilize specialized equipment to conduct repairs safely and efficiently.
  • Install new service lines for both residential and commercial clients.
  • Maintain the operational integrity of the water distribution and pumping systems, including fire hydrants.
  • Conduct minor repairs and adjustments on equipment.
  • Flush fire hydrants as required.
  • Execute other related tasks as assigned.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and promptly report any unsafe conditions or incidents to a supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • One to three years of relevant work experience is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screening is mandatory.
  • Possession of a valid Class 'C' Driver's License and insurability is required.
  • Completion of Emergency Management and Incident Command Training within the first three months of employment is necessary.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with the safe and effective operation of machinery and equipment.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and the necessary safety measures.
  • Ability to follow instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively with other municipal employees and the public.

Working Conditions

  • This position is safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Regular exposure to extreme weather conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Job duties may require frequent physical exertion.
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
