Sanctuary for Families is a premier organization in New York dedicated to providing services and advocacy for individuals affected by domestic violence, sex trafficking, and other forms of gender-based violence. Each year, we empower numerous adults and children to transition from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive array of services. Our mission includes offering extensive support to help survivors rebuild their lives post-abuse and advocating for the end of gender violence through three main strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are accessible across multiple locations throughout New York City.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Camp Supervisor will play a crucial role in supporting the Camp HOPE America - New York framework. This initiative is designed as a trauma-informed camp catering to campers who have experienced gender-based violence and related trauma. Staff members engaging with this population must be empathetic, compassionate, and well-versed in the effects of trauma on individuals. The Lead Supervisor will take on a managerial role, providing guidance and support to junior counselors while being responsible for notifying the Clinical Camp Director and Camp Director of any emerging concerns. Overall, they will ensure the smooth operation of daily camp activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directly oversee a team of 12 staff members and a group of 18 campers.
- Offer leadership, guidance, and support to junior counselors.
- Model effective camper behavior management techniques and assist in resolving camper-camper and camper-counselor conflicts.
- Collaborate with the Camp Clinical Director to equip counselors with behavior management skills and additional support for campers.
- Ensure compliance with all Camp HOPE America curriculum requirements.
- Manage and maintain all camper daily logs and Character Trait awards.
- Provide coverage for General Counselor breaks as necessary.
- Prioritize the needs of campers in all decision-making processes.
- Facilitate open communication between counselors and administration.
- Co-lead morning meetings with the Assistant Director.
- Participate in all camp activities and assist the Camp Director as needed.
- Communicate camp policies, traditions, and rules to campers and counselors.
- Exhibit good health practices and maintain a professional appearance.
- Take responsibility for the care and use of camp facilities and equipment.
- Be knowledgeable about emergency procedures and guide counselors and campers in following them when necessary.
- Dedicate time to campers to meet their needs, challenge their abilities, and serve as a role model.
- Engage in overnight events and hikes.
- Adhere to additional rules and regulations as determined by the Camp Director.
- Work collaboratively with fellow staff to achieve program goals.
- Provide constructive feedback to general counselors.
RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION
- Collaborate with the Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, and Camp HOPE Leadership team.
- Engage with agency children's services staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma; 1 or 2 years of college education preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience in camping and supervising children or completion of an acceptable training program.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- At least one year of supervisory experience.
- Passionate about working with children.
- Willingness to work and live outdoors during the summer.
- Emotionally mature and a team player.
- Flexible and open to challenges.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Physically capable of various activities including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, talking, and hearing.
- Comfortable in wet, humid, and hot conditions.
COMPENSATION
Budgeted Salary: $900.00
