Overview

The Senior Accounting Specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the general ledger for the University, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and internal controls. This position involves managing tight deadlines and a variety of accounting functions, including general journal entries, account reconciliations, financial reporting, year-end audit preparations, and assisting with budgetary processes.

Key Responsibilities

· Execute assigned journal entries and reconciliations

· Collaborate with the Controller to manage user access to the general ledger

· Assist various departments across all campuses in accessing budgetary information and financial activities

· Aid in the implementation of Retention Policies for the University’s accounting records

· Partner with the Controller to ensure a smooth and timely year-end audit

· Support the Controller with special projects and ongoing process enhancements

· Contribute to the Accounting Services Department's transition to a paperless environment

· Uphold and demonstrate commitment to the Principles and Expectations of Southwest Baptist University

Supervisory Role

· This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education, training, or experience necessary to effectively fulfill the role. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be indicative but not exhaustive of those typically associated with this position.

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting

· Familiarity with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

· Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Adobe, with advanced Excel skills for complex worksheet preparation

· Strong analytical capabilities and meticulous attention to detail

· Excellent interpersonal skills for effective interaction with employees, students, and external parties in a professional manner

· Proficient writing and communication skills

· Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently

Preferred Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in Accounting and two years of relevant experience

· Previous experience in Higher Education

· Familiarity with Colleague by Ellucian

Work Environment

· Standard office setting with moderate noise levels (i.e., business office equipped with computers, phones, printers, and light traffic)

Physical Requirements

· Ability to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone

· Must be capable of remaining seated for up to 50% of the time

· Ability to reach, stoop, and kneel to access file cabinets and office equipment on a daily basis

· Ability to see a computer screen and perform close work on spreadsheets

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

· Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance

· Ability to focus on complex formulas and communicate intricate financial information to internal and external stakeholders amidst multiple interruptions
