POSITION SUMMARY:
The Clinical Nutrition Specialist is accountable for overseeing the Dietary Services Department, ensuring the delivery of nutritious, appetizing, and well-balanced meals tailored to meet the daily dietary and special nutritional requirements of each resident, as determined by their comprehensive assessment and care plan. In partnership with the Dietary Manager and Administrator, this role optimizes departmental resources efficiently to guarantee that each resident receives appropriate food quantities, types, consistency, and frequency to sustain their usual body weight and nutritional health.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Conducts interviews with patients and their families to gather essential nutritional information necessary for creating personalized dietary care plans for residents.
- Completes relevant clinical documentation in the medical records regarding the nutritional needs of patients, adhering to regulatory standards.
- Performs and updates dietary evaluations as part of the comprehensive assessment process for residents.
- Reviews and ensures that regular and therapeutic diet orders are executed as prescribed and in line with the established menu.
- Documents and considers patients' cultural backgrounds that may influence their food choices.
- Engages with patients and family members to obtain updated information to address individual needs and preferences while safeguarding residents' rights.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to formulate, implement, and assess residents' care plans.
- Participates in care plan meetings, communicating resident concerns and responses to interventions to team members and direct care staff.
- Conducts quarterly audits of clinical records to identify improvement opportunities and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Identifies methods to respect residents' choices, preferences, and customary dining routines, incorporating these into the care plan and communicating with relevant staff.
- Modifies menus as necessary to align with the preferences of the facility's resident population.
- Performs regular meal observations, record assessments, and resident interviews to ensure adherence to prescribed dietary orders and nutritional interventions.
- Executes quality assurance activities, including routine compliance checks of the Dietary Department's food preparation and storage areas to meet regulatory standards.
- Guides staff in enhancing the quality of food served and the overall dining experience.
- In collaboration with the Dietary Manager, participates in the recruitment and hiring of qualified staff to fulfill essential job functions.
- Collects and presents supplementary documentation to mitigate potential deficiencies.
- Works alongside the Corporate Dietitian to ensure timely responses to information requests and suggestions for improving the quality of Dietary Services.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
A Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or a related field is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a professional food service environment, including clinical experience in a healthcare setting, focusing on dietary needs identification, planning, and program implementation.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a current, unrestricted, and active registration from the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics relevant to the state of practice.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience as a Dietitian in long-term care and/or geriatric settings is preferred.
