Key Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) plays a pivotal role in the perioperative setting, collaborating closely with surgeons and healthcare teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. This position is accountable for delivering safe, effective, and quality patient-centered care throughout the perioperative process, which encompasses preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases for diverse patient populations.

The RNFA serves as a surgical assistant during invasive procedures while also being prepared to fulfill additional roles such as circulating nurse and surgical scrub when necessary. It is essential that the RNFA maintains compliance with established procedures, scope of practice, and competency standards.

Essential Functions:

  1. Engage in continuous education and competency assessments relevant to RN and RNFA functions.
  2. Act as an educator and resource for peers regarding RNFA practices and surgical roles.
  3. Exhibit strong critical thinking abilities to guide and influence nursing practices.
  4. Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  5. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance evaluations.
  6. Utilize problem-solving skills to foster positive team dynamics.
  7. Ensure compliance with regulatory and credentialing standards for RNFA practice.
  8. Consult with healthcare professionals on patient care and quality issues.
  9. Lead nursing excellence initiatives and support departmental goals.
  10. Document nursing care accurately and comprehensively.

The RNFA will assist in managing the daily operating room schedule to optimize patient care and efficiency. Responsibilities include postoperative follow-ups and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. The RNFA will perform as the first surgical assistant across various surgical specialties, ensuring adherence to established protocols and standards.

Qualifications

Education:

A Bachelor's degree is required or must be in progress with completion expected within 24 months of hire. An approved RNFA certificate is mandatory.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of operating room experience, combining both scrub and circulating roles, is required. Leadership skills and the ability to mentor other nursing staff are essential.

Licensure and Certification:

Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required, along with a Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) credential.

This position demands flexibility in scheduling to accommodate the needs of patients and the healthcare team.
