Surgical Technician/LPN- Operating Room

Main Function:

As a Surgical Technician/LPN, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care under the direction of the Unit Director. You will be expected to meet the qualifications and performance standards of Arnot Health and the Surgical Department, including documentation of educational classes, CPR certification, and participation in Performance Improvement programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:Knowledge Base:

• Demonstrate knowledge of Standard Precautions and sterile technique.

• Demonstrate knowledge of basic anatomy relevant to surgical procedures.

• Provide age-appropriate care within the scope of the duties and responsibilities of a Surgical Technician/LPN in the Surgical Department.

Direct Services to Patients:

• Assist in assembling and setting up the operating rooms with supplies, instruments, appliances, and equipment specified for the surgical procedure.

• Assist the licensed practitioner in moving and positioning patients for surgical procedures.

• Assist the licensed practitioner in non-invasive prepping of the skin surface and holding for surgical preps as required.

• Maintain correct count of sponges, needles, and instruments with the RN and report discrepancies per Arnot Health policies and procedures.

Indirect Services to Patients:

• Assist in maintenance and care of surgical specimens as directed by accepted standards to prevent loss or damage.

• Perform errands as required by the Surgical Department, receiving/returning blood, lab items, x-rays, pharmacy items, and supplies.

• Assist in the processing of supplies through cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, or storage procedures.

Safety:

• Function with awareness of risk management and safety issues, reporting concerns appropriately.

• Maintain complete understanding of Arnot Health's emergency procedures and personal role in regard to fire safety, Code Blue, disaster, and hazard procedures.

Quality in Daily Work:

• Demonstrate quality improvement principles in daily work.

• Perform and complete assignments practicing consistent quality and quantity of work.

• Properly care for equipment and utilize supplies in a cost-effective manner.

Working Relationships:

• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and other members of the healthcare team.

• Assist in the general maintenance of the department with duties such as in-room sanitation between surgical procedures and keeping assigned work areas clean and neat.

Professional Responsibilities:

• Adhere to Arnot Health's policy for behavior and appearance.

• Attend routine and mandatory staff meetings or initiate arrangements for follow-up with questions, concerns, or staff development needs.

• Maintain and increase standard of performance and education by attending continuing education in-services.

• Assist in staff development and revision of procedures and related items.

• Act as a preceptor as requested.

• Take call after demonstrating job competence and respond immediately when called upon for additional or emergency service.
