Clinical Research Finance Coordinator II (Post-Award) Job Description

The Clinical Research Finance Coordinator II is a key role in managing the financial operations of clinical research projects after award funding has been secured. This position oversees the financial aspects of ongoing research studies, ensuring compliance with sponsor agreements and institutional policies.

As a Clinical Research Finance Coordinator II, you will work closely with investigators, research teams, and finance departments to monitor budgets, track expenses, and prepare financial reports. Your primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with investigators and ancillary departments to identify research procedures needed, budget estimates, and cost details.
  • Evaluating complex research protocols to assess resource needs, research procedures, clinical research staff time, investigator time, and costs from ancillary departments.
  • Determining whether research procedures in the protocol are standard-of-care or research-related costs to correctly classify expenses.
  • Developing complex clinical trial budgets for industry and National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as investigator-initiated clinical research.
  • Negotiating trial budgets and payment terms with industry sponsors.
  • Monitoring study accounts to evaluate cost expenses/details are appropriate and within expected limits, reconciling accounts receivable and payments, and recommending the best course of action for any deficits and/or surpluses.
  • Responsible for invoicing sponsors, patient research billing, reimbursement to ancillary departments, and payment tracking.
  • Issuing and submitting invoices for protocol-related items and patient-related expenses per the executed contract and internal invoices for staff time and effort allocation into study accounts.
  • Extracting and defining relevant information, analyzing and interpreting data to determine financial performance and/or project a financial probability, making recommendations to influence business results.
  • Preparing and delivering data, reports, and/or presentations to investigators, management, and/or leadership.
