Scrap Metal Handler

Job Summary:

The Scrap Metal Handler is an entry-level position at Gerdau, reflecting employees with no previous knowledge or experience related to scrap metals and recycling. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic and the ability to learn and adapt quickly.

Responsibilities:

1. Assist in scrap inspection, sortation, and general yard maintenance as directed.
2. Operate mobile equipment and perform general maintenance duties on machinery.
3. Inspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards.
4. Apply deductions to non-conforming materials through effective communication with the scale house or yard inspector.
5. Perform and document daily Routine Equipment Care (REC).
6. Detect and report faulty tools, equipment, environmental hazards, and safety hazards to a supervisor.
7. Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly fashion.
8. Provide excellent customer service.
9. Promote and practice the core values of Gerdau.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Ensure non-conforming objects have been removed from incoming scrap vehicles.
2. Ensure radioactive materials are removed from inbound/outbound scrap material and quarantined properly.
3. General house-keeping duties: sweep shop area and removal of garbage.
4. Assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed by non-ferrous operator.
5. Assist co-workers in general operational duties that are essential to the yard in terms of safety, efficiency, and profitability.
6. Problem-solving input and contributions as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

1. Desire to enhance skills and knowledge to develop as a Gerdau employee.
2. Promote and practice the core values of Gerdau.
3. High School Education preferred but not required.
