COFFEE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM
Position: Bus Driver
Reporting To: Director of Transportation
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license with CDL-B
- Proven excellent driving record or equivalent combination of education and training
The individual must demonstrate the ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely. This includes possessing the skills necessary to drive a large bus.
Requirements:
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination, including controlled substance testing.
Random testing for controlled substances and alcohol is also required.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Physical capability, including strength, agility, dexterity, visual acuity, and ocular-motor reaction time, to operate a school bus safely in all situations, including emergencies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Transport students safely along assigned routes according to a set schedule, which may involve driving during early morning and evening hours.
Operate the vehicle in accordance with all traffic and safety regulations, demonstrating defensive driving practices and adhering to posted speed limits.
- Conduct all necessary activities to safely drive a school bus, ensuring the transportation of Coffee County School students and authorized personnel to and from educational institutions and related events.
Provide transportation for field trips, sanctioned outings, athletic events, and extracurricular activities, which may require evening driving as assigned.
- Monitor students for potentially hazardous situations while riding; confiscate sharp objects and report any disciplinary issues to the appropriate authorities.
Ensure orderly boarding and disembarking of students, taking necessary safety precautions during these processes.
- Inspect the bus regularly, checking fuel, oil, water, lights, brakes, and steering; adjust heating and ventilation systems for passenger comfort before driving.
Identify maintenance needs and arrange for repairs as necessary.
- Report all accidents to the school system and law enforcement promptly.
Manage emergency situations effectively, stabilizing the situation until help arrives, and may need to assist students in evacuating the bus safely.
- Maintain records of the number of passengers transported.
- Clean the bus interior and exterior as required.
- Adhere to all safety and cleanliness standards set by the department and relevant regulatory bodies.
Demonstrate the ability to interact positively with students, gaining their respect and maintaining discipline to ensure safe driving conditions.
- Exhibit knowledge of child behavior and safety practices essential for fulfilling daily responsibilities.
Maintain familiarity with the local street and road systems within Coffee County.
- Ensure safe, proper, and courteous vehicle operation at all times.
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills.
- Foster a positive, safe, and peaceful environment on the school bus.
- Comply with state regulations and laws regarding school bus operation.
General Expectations:
- Adhere to Federal and State laws and established policies and procedures in alignment with School Board priorities.
Conduct oneself in the best interest of students, upholding the highest standards of public education and supporting the District's Vision and Mission Statements.
- Maintain ethical standards, including professionalism and the safeguarding of confidential student and staff information.
