Job Description

The General Manager in Training (GMIT) is a key role within Wawa, responsible for supporting the General Manager in the management of the entire store operation. The GMIT will ensure the management team executes the organizational objectives, initiatives, and achievement of store and profit goals. This includes managing all controllable expenses, optimizing revenue streams, and leading and developing a high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure a positive shopping experience for all customers by responding to customer complaints or inquiries, soliciting customer feedback, and creating a plan to consistently meet customer expectations.
  • Support the General Manager with staffing the store to cover customer and business demands, identifying hiring needs, and interviewing candidates.
  • Assist with allocating resources, prioritizing and delegating work, and managing time through efficient scheduling and labor hour usage.
  • Help allocate resources for effective training execution, validate associate training, and conduct management training.
  • Assist in creating and sustaining an inclusive store atmosphere by promoting mutual understanding and respect, celebrating and recognizing store associates, and developing talent management processes.
  • Support the General Manager with change initiatives, championing programs, and educating associates on the reason and need for change.
  • Ensure conditions across the store meet or exceed standards for safety, service, and operational efficiency by analyzing opportunities and executing established policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Assist the General Manager in meeting or exceeding key performance metric targets, help deliver budgeted merchandise gross profit, and maintain awareness of store-level and organizational financial performance trends.
  • Analyze income statement and utilize reports to ensure store profitability, manage inventory to maximize sales, control costs, and reduce waste, and manage cash management procedures.
  • Analyze results and trends from audits and recommend appropriate action to resolve issues.
  • Build relationships with community partners to connect the store with its community and leverage tools, resources, and information throughout the organization.

  • Must be able to perform physical behaviors repetitively throughout a shift, including standing, walking, handling, reaching, and grasping.
  • Must be able to perform physical behaviors frequently throughout a shift, including reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the waist, pushing buttons, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, kneeling, and pushing.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 lbs.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or related field preferred.
  • Experience selecting, training, performance management of staff, sales building, labor allocation & scheduling, managing expenses.
  • Ability to work hours per week.
  • Flexible availability which may include all shifts, weekends, and holidays, based on business needs.
  • Experience effectively implementing change and demonstrated results in execution.
  • Experienced in all areas of store operations, including foodservice.
  • Leadership experience in a fast-paced retail, food service, or fuel environment preferred.
  • Serve Safe Certification.
  • Proven and consistently demonstrated skills in exceptional customer service, relationship building, and effective communication.
  • Ability to relocate as needed preferred.
