SUMMARY
Assists program personnel in fostering a high-quality educational atmosphere where each child can reach their fullest potential in social skills and cognitive development necessary for future educational settings.
Engages in various instructional activities within the classroom to support the lead educator.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other responsibilities may be assigned.
Primary Responsibilities
- Collaborates in the daily planning and execution of classroom activities alongside the educator.
- Establishes a rapport with the families of the children.
- Assists in maintaining records and documentation.
- Participates in training sessions provided for staff development.
- Supports the educator in adhering to daily lesson outlines.
- Helps implement the objectives and standards outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards.
- Takes charge of the classroom in the absence of the educator or assistant.
- Assists in evaluating children's progress.
- Contributes to the preparation of individual and anecdotal records.
- Conducts daily health assessments for children.
- Performs additional tasks as directed by the educator.
- Ensures the safety and accountability of children by visually confirming their presence.
- Supervises children in various settings including the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and playground, providing assistance as necessary.
- Assists in data entry tasks as needed.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Assists in the transportation of children as a monitor when assigned.
- Accompanies the educator on home visits when required.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Educational and Developmental Support
Ensures that the educational environment is tailored to be developmentally appropriate, acknowledging that children develop at their own pace and possess unique interests, temperaments, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles.
Promotes the holistic development of children's social, emotional, cognitive, language, and physical skills.
Implements a curriculum that accommodates individualized activities, integrates educational components across various program areas, fosters social relationships, enhances self-awareness, and develops cognitive abilities.
Engages parents in the curriculum development process and participates in conferences and home visits to discuss child development.
Provides opportunities for parents to observe their children and collaborate with staff to tailor learning experiences.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or equivalent (GED), along with EDU 119 or a CDA Credential, and one to three months of relevant experience or training; or a comparable combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and understand simple instructions, brief correspondence, and memos. Capable of writing basic correspondence.
Ability to effectively communicate information in one-on-one and small group settings to clients, customers, and colleagues.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Capable of addressing problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Employee must pass an annual physical examination, TB screening, and submit to random drug tests.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Incumbent must possess a Child Care Credential II & I (EDU 119) or a CDA Credential, maintain a valid state-issued driver's license, and hold current certifications in CPR and First Aid.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Incumbent must demonstrate a working knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, NC Day Care Regulations, and the operation of desktop computers, related software, printers, copiers, fax machines, and other office equipment.
