About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Radiation Therapist to join our team at Duke University. As a Radiation Therapist, you will play a critical role in delivering high-quality patient care and contributing to the advancement of health care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer accurately prescribed radiation therapy to patients, ensuring minimal supervision and maximum patient safety.
  • Check prescriptions, diagnoses, charts, and patient identification to ensure accurate treatment.
  • Explain procedures to patients, including means of communication during treatment and procedures to follow in case of an emergency.
  • Reinforce Radiation Oncologist's advice to patients regarding reactions to treatment and their care.
  • Prepare rooms and equipment for patients according to prescriptions, including immobilization devices, field sizes, treatment distances, and lead protection devices.
  • Transfer patients safely to treatment couches, giving special care to catheters, intravenous drips, and other medical equipment.
  • Maintain visual and audible communication with patients during treatment.
  • Maintain patient markings and observe patients for unusual reactions and events, reporting accurate information to nursing staff and/or Radiation Oncologists.
  • Observe radiation safety measures for patients and personnel.
  • Perform simulations, assist in tumor localization procedures, prepare immobilization devices, and assist in dosimetry procedures.
  • Obtain weekly port films and present them at chart rounds for review by Radiation Oncology staff.
  • Assume weekly on-call status on a rotation basis (applicable to Duke staff therapists only).
  • Perform and document daily accelerator warm-up and QA procedures.
  • Maintain records of daily treatment and other records as required by department quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Secure and maintain supplies, secure x-ray and lab reports as needed, and report erratic operation of equipment to Chief Radiation Therapist, Radiation Physicist, and/or Medical Engineer.
  • Participate in departmental PI (Performance Improvement) activities, assist in the hiring and orienting of new personnel, attend weekly QA rounds, monthly therapy meetings, and educational in-services.
Requirements
  • Satisfactory completion of a 24-month course in radiology technology and a 12-month course in radiation therapy technology, or a registered nurse with satisfactory completion of a 12-month course in radiation therapy technology, or a Bachelor of Science degree in radiation therapy.
  • One year of clinical training in Radiation Therapy.
  • Current licensure as required by state or national authority and/or certification or board eligible in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiology Technology.
  • Maintain ARRT certification in radiation therapy with a minimum of documented 12 hours of continuing education.
