Job Overview

POSITION: County Food Service Cook

DEPARTMENT: Office of Sheriff

PAY RATE: $18.49 per hour

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Permanent, Full-Time

WORK SCHEDULE: 4 days on, 2 days off

WORK HOURS: Alternating shifts from 4:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM

IMPORTANT NOTES: Appointment is subject to a pre-employment drug screening and a comprehensive background investigation.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. High school graduation or equivalent, along with one year of full-time paid experience in food preparation; or
  2. Completion of a culinary arts program or related field from a recognized vocational/technical institution; or
  3. A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above.
Special Requirements
  1. Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at the time of hire, to be maintained throughout employment.
  2. Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screening.
Key Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Cook will be responsible for:

  • Preparing and serving meals within the correctional facility.
  • Cooking a variety of foods including meats, fish, poultry, soups, vegetables, and desserts.
  • Baking various pastries and breads.
  • Portioning food for distribution on trays and carts.
  • Operating standard kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ensuring proper food storage practices are followed.
  • Supervising inmate helpers and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen.
  • Assigning tasks to inmate helpers for food preparation and facility cleaning.
  • Training inmate helpers in kitchen operations.
  • Maintaining inventory of kitchen supplies and food items.
  • Keeping accurate records related to food service operations.
  • Implementing routine dietary changes as needed.
  • Conducting quality assurance checks on food served.
