Position Summary

Objective:

Oversee, coordinate, and manage personnel while developing budgets to ensure the campus grounds are both aesthetically pleasing and functional. This role encompasses various aspects of horticulture, management, and environmental care. Responsibilities include enhancing campus landscapes and maintaining the fleet of facilities vehicles.

Core Responsibilities:

Management and Operations:

  • Compliance with local landscaping regulations and environmental standards.

Visual and Functional Maintenance:
Ensure the campus grounds, including lawns, gardens, pathways, and sports fields, are visually appealing and functional.
  • Event Preparation: Prepare outdoor areas for events, ceremonies, and recreational activities.
  • Team Leadership: Direct a team of six groundskeepers and maintenance personnel to effectively carry out landscaping duties.
  • Budget Oversight: Manage budgets, contracts, and vendor relations associated with grounds upkeep.
  • Safety and Environmental Practices: Implement safety protocols, sustainable methods, and pest management strategies.
  • Equipment Management: Identify and maintain necessary tools, services, and supplies for effective grounds operations.
Project Coordination:

  • Modify, add, or replace landscaping elements such as retaining walls, outdated plants, and lawns as needed.
  • Collaborate with contractors and project managers to ensure contract execution and compliance.
Fleet Management:

  • Maintain records of the facilities fleet and grounds equipment.
  • Oversee fuel management, including ordering and distribution.
Winter Operations:

  • Lead snow removal initiatives and assign tasks to facilities staff as necessary.
General Responsibilities:

  • Manage campus trees and coordinate with local public works for necessary removals.
  • Adjust seasonal plantings and decorate the campus for special occasions.
  • Ensure the maintenance of campus roads and walkways.
Repair and Maintenance:

  • Conduct annual inspections of catch basins and arrange for cleaning or repairs as needed.
  • Assist with utility digging within a reasonable scope of work.
  • Maintain lawns through scheduled treatments and care.
  • Collaborate with other departments as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in plant science or a related field.
Experience:
  • A minimum of five years in grounds management.
  • Demonstrated experience in a managerial role within grounds or facilities management.
  • Strong knowledge of turf management and horticultural practices.
  • Proficiency in operating various heavy machinery.
  • Exceptional organizational, leadership, and decision-making abilities.

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports directly to the Director of Facilities.
  • Supervises a team of six staff members.

Work Environment:

  • This position is primarily based at the university's main campus and may involve occasional travel to other locations.
