Nursing Assistant Job Description

A Nursing Assistant, or Nursing Aide, plays a vital role in providing healthcare and support to patients in a medical facility. Their primary duties include offering basic physical assistance to patients, feeding patients according to their dietary needs, and recording vital signs.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Assist patients with daily living activities, such as using the bathroom and maintaining personal hygiene
  • Provide basic care, including cleaning and bathing patients, and changing bedding
  • Help patients move between wheelchairs, seats, and beds, and serve meals and assist with eating
  • Measure vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature, and report any concerns to a Registered Nurse or Doctor
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong communication skills
  • Ability to follow directions and work effectively in a team environment
  • Flexibility in work duties and schedule, with the ability to lift and move patients as needed
  • Good foundation of clinical skills and knowledge, with the ability to learn and adapt to new situations
Education and Training:

Nursing Assistants must complete an accredited training program and pass a state-issued exam. A high school diploma or GED is typically required for admission to these programs, which can take one to four months to complete and involve classroom instruction and practical experience.

Experience:

While prior experience is not typically required, some employers may prefer Nursing Assistants with at least one year of experience, especially when working with special patient populations. On-the-job training from Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses is common, and Philip Health Services provides comprehensive training and orientation for new hires.
