Job Title: Assistant Port Engineer

UIC Government Services and the Bowhead Family of Companies are seeking a highly skilled Assistant Port Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our marine operations team, you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance operations of our vessels and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain all Bowhead equipment, both land-based and at sea, to ensure it is in safe operational condition.
  • Coordinate vessel repairs and maintenance operations with the Port Engineer and Bowhead Transport Management.
  • Assist the Port Captain in scheduling, planning, and overseeing haul outs, shipyard work, and off-season/in-season repairs and maintenance on all Bowhead Transport vessels and equipment.
  • Coordinate the purchase of equipment or operational supplies with the Port Engineer as needed.
  • Travel as needed to support marine operations.
  • Perform field work, including loading, lashing, consolidating, and manifesting cargo as needed in various port locations.
Requirements:
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Local resident of Seward, Alaska, or surrounding area preferred.
  • General PC knowledge, including spreadsheet software, word processing software, and knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, positive attitude, problem-solving ability, and good judgment.
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Physical Demands:

The work environment varies and includes shipyards, docks, ports, bays, beaches, waterways, office space, equipment rooms, warehouse space, construction zones, and outdoor environments. Work hours may fluctuate outside of normal duty hours.

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is required to work with hands performing mechanic/engineer duties with tools, equipment, and supplies. Frequently required to stand and/or walk and routinely required to reach with hands and arms. Routinely required to stand, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or squat. Regularly required to sit for prolonged periods at a desk or workspace utilizing computer phones and office supplies. Required to sit for prolonged periods during travel by plane or auto. Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds.

Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs: All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements. If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
