Position Overview

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will conduct comprehensive and precise evaluations, interventions, and treatments for both urgent and non-urgent patients in a dynamic primary care environment characterized by a high patient turnover. You will leverage critical thinking skills and a thorough understanding of atypical findings to respond effectively with appropriate interventions, adhering to established treatment protocols without the necessity for direct physician oversight. You will operate autonomously as a clinical leader while also functioning collaboratively within the team as a community resource, educator, advocate, and consultant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver effective direct patient care in a primary care/urgent care environment. Maintain an extensive knowledge base regarding various medical conditions, medications, and treatment procedures specific to urgent care practices. Ensure timely and accurate assessment, evaluation, and treatment of patients, while continuously monitoring and documenting changes in patient conditions and intervening as necessary in accordance with established policies or after consulting with a physician or nurse practitioner. Delegate tasks appropriately to unlicensed assistive personnel and oversee their performance. 50%
  • Accurately perform triage and guide physician/nurse practitioner examinations based on patient acuity. Initiate necessary tests prior to physician evaluations according to established protocols based on patient assessments. Collaborate with physicians/nurse practitioners to determine the management of urgent patients and prepare them for transfer if required. Engage in ongoing evaluation of patient flow and conduct rounds on waiting patients to provide updates and explanations as necessary. 20%
  • Act as an advocate for patients and their families. Assess the educational needs of patients and provide necessary instruction. Respond promptly to telephone inquiries during your assigned shift whenever feasible. Discuss patient concerns with physicians as needed and inform patients of physician recommendations and any required follow-up. Schedule outpatient diagnostic tests and ensure all necessary pre-certifications are completed prior to examinations. 10%
  • Ensure accurate documentation of billing codes and medication identification numbers. 5%
  • Assist physicians/nurse practitioners during examinations, treatments, and procedures. Provide comfort and safety measures for patients before, during, and after procedures. Take responsibility for patient safety by maintaining a secure environment, adhering to safety protocols, and upholding patient care standards. Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times. 5%
  • Contribute to the upkeep of a clean and organized work environment in accordance with organizational policies, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements. Ensure clinical areas are stocked and free of expired medications and supplies. 5%
  • Champion the development, implementation, and evaluation of improvement initiatives and policies specific to the facility. Assist in training and mentoring new team members until they achieve proficiency. Foster team development and collaborate with team members to address identified areas for improvement. 5%

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This position does not involve management responsibilities and will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Nursing
  • No prior experience required

Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses

  • Current RN License in South Carolina

Other Required Skills and Experience

  • Experience with patient equipment (Vitals, Suction, Defibrillator) - Required
  • Competency in IV and phlebotomy - Required
  • Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, Arrhythmia Training, ENPC, or PALS - Required (Post Hire)
