Job Title: Assessor

Join the Town of Ashland as an Assessor, a key role in our Finance Department. As an Assessor, you will be responsible for overseeing the valuation of real and personal property, ensuring accurate assessments and compliance with Massachusetts General Laws.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the assessment and valuation of real and personal property, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Assessing Department, utilizing knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws and assessing practices.
  • Coordinate cyclical inspection programs, administer value changes, and maintain the Town's valuation database.
  • Use specialized software applications, including Tyler Assessing and MUNIS, to input data and prepare billing files.
  • Assist taxpayers and the public with technical information and serve as a liaison to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
  • Independently research abatement and exemption applications, make recommendations, and ensure timely notification of taxpayers and other Town departments.
  • Represent the Town before the Appellate Tax Board and oversee the Town's overlay account.
  • Supervise and train Assessing Department staff on technical information and software systems.
  • Prepare the tax recapitulation sheet, annual budget, and spreadsheets of office expenditures.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other Town departments, the Department of Revenue, and the general public.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, real estate, or a related field.
  • Seven years or more of progressively responsible experience in property valuation, including five years of supervisory experience.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of assessing practices, financial record keeping, and automated office administration.
  • Experience with specialized assessing software, such as Patriot Properties Assesspro and MUNIS.
  • Professional designation(s) of Massachusetts Accredited Assessor (MAA), Residential Massachusetts Assessor (RMA), or Certified Massachusetts Assessor (CMA) preferred.
What We Offer:
