Key Responsibilities of the Certified Medication Aide:

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) plays a crucial role in:

  1. Administering or assisting with the administration and/or oversight of medications to residents in a safe, precise, and timely manner, adhering to state regulations.
  2. Providing both physical and emotional support to residents, ensuring their dignity, choices, and individuality are respected.

Core Duties:

  • Administers or supervises medication administration in accordance with physician orders documented on the Medication Administration Record (MAR).
  • Accurately documents medication administration on the MAR, ensuring completeness and accuracy in line with company policies.
  • Conducts shift change reports with incoming and outgoing staff.
  • Maintains the security of the medication cart and narcotic keys throughout the shift, performing narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift as per company protocols.
  • Assists residents with daily living activities, including bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting, eating, and mobility.
  • Collaborates effectively with colleagues and other team members.
  • Exhibits professionalism in all interactions with residents and their families.
  • Reports any suspected or observed instances of abuse to licensed staff immediately.
  • Utilizes safe transfer techniques when assisting residents with mobility.
  • Observes and communicates changes in residents' physical and emotional conditions to the Wellness Director or charge nurse as necessary.
  • Assists residents with eating, particularly those with swallowing difficulties.
  • Responds promptly and calmly to emergencies, reporting them to the charge nurse or Wellness Director.
  • Follows established infection control procedures and safety regulations.
  • Ensures cleanliness in residents' rooms and reports any safety or sanitation violations to the supervisor.
  • Documents service provision accurately on company forms.
  • Operates necessary medical equipment and communication devices.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provides comprehensive care and services to assigned residents and assists other wellness staff as needed.
  • Participates in resident-centered activities and programs.
  • Maintains sensory enhancement devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids.
  • Completes light housekeeping tasks as required.
  • Assists with resident transportation needs within the facility.
  • Facilitates resident correspondence and communication as requested.
  • Conducts room checks and rounds on residents.
  • Monitors for safety hazards in the environment.
  • Assists with dining-related tasks, including escorting residents and serving meals.
  • Attends staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
  • Employs effective communication techniques in sensitive situations.
  • Follows up on reported issues and concerns with appropriate staff and residents.
  • Acts as a representative of the organization to visitors and guests.
  • Demonstrates respect for the heritage and values of residents, understanding the aging process.
  • Collaborates with other departments to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Engages in assigned projects or committees.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of state-required training and certification for medication aides, along with the Company Medication Aide Skills Competency Checklist.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Good physical health, free from communicable diseases; ability to lift, bend, and maneuver medication carts as needed.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Successful completion of drug testing and background checks as required.
  • Experience in assisted living settings is preferred.
