About the Role:

This Custodian position performs routine cleaning and maintenance tasks in assigned areas of a school building. The ideal candidate will have general knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment, as well as excellent customer service skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum all classrooms, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and specialty rooms;
  • Keep building and premises neat and clean at all times;
  • Use appropriate equipment and supplies to wipe and sanitize toilets, sinks, mirrors, countertops, windows, and water fountains;
  • Empty trash and restock paper products at all points of use;
  • Refinish or restore resilient floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, finishing, buffing/burnishing, scrubbing, and/or recoating;
  • Vacuum and care for building carpeting;
  • Maintain building perimeter by sweeping walkways, removing weeds, trimming shrubbery, and shoveling snow;
  • Pick up litter and debris on outside school grounds;
  • Replace light bulbs, tubes, ceiling tile, switch and outlet plates, and pencil sharpeners as needed;
  • Move furniture, fold and unfold chairs safely as needed;
  • Store and care for all cleaning equipment and cleaning materials;
  • Respond to requests from school administrators and staff to include minor maintenance, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries, setting up and taking down for functions and student activities;
  • Demonstrate professionalism at all times;
  • Drive a county vehicle as required, following standard operating procedures associated with this task;
  • Follow Blood-Borne Pathogen procedures, respond to accidents or potential safety hazards that may require contact with chemical spills, blood, or other bodily fluids;
  • Use various pieces of power equipment, including riding scrubbers, rotary machines, pressure washers, drills, carpet extractors, vacuums, and specialty equipment;
  • Provide custodial services at any of our schools as needed; float custodians will be assigned schools to report to daily;
  • This position is designated as Essential Personnel, requiring employees to report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit;

Requirements:

This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of work experience in a customer service, custodial, or janitorial setting. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is also required.
