Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Urban Planning Specialist to join our team at the City of Las Cruces, NM. As an Urban Planning Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring the city's growth and development align with its goals and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and professional planning services to achieve consistent and controlled growth in the city.
  • Review and evaluate development proposals, development designs, applications, planning and zoning changes, variance requests, technical documents, and special permits for compliance with city standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist the public and other agencies in matters relating to planning, zoning, and permit review, and provide information and recommendations within the scope of authority.
  • Manage special projects as assigned, conduct research and analysis on permits, plans, rules, and regulations, and conduct field surveys to evaluate sites and determine suitability of proposed land use changes.
  • Participate in meetings with government officials and community groups, provide information to the Planning & Zoning Commission, the City Manager, City Council, and other city departments as needed, and coordinate with various regional government organizations, community groups, and state and Federal agencies.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Planning, Engineering, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Two years of municipal, urban, or regional planning experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred.
Working Conditions

The work is performed in an office setting with light physical demands and frequent use of a personal computer.
