About Us

Community of Hope is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to improving health and ending family homelessness in Washington, DC. With over 40 years of experience, we provide healthcare, housing, and supportive services for under-resourced populations.

Our Approach

We care for families by providing direct services focusing on prevention, healing, and wellness. We improve lives by building on individuals' strengths, honoring their choices, and taking a whole-family, multi-generational approach. We lead and advocate for system change to address the effects of historical and current racial inequities on health outcomes and housing opportunities.

The Role

We are seeking a Medical Assistant to support our Birth Center team. The successful candidate will work closely with Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) to assist with non-clinical duties and serve as a second on-site staff member with CPR and NRP certifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up birth rooms for clients in labor, including checking emergency equipment;
  • Maintain a comfortable, clean environment in the birth room;
  • Provide ongoing support for clients and families as needed from admission to discharge;
  • Assist CNMs with tasks surrounding delivery, including ensuring necessary instruments are within reach, assisting with drying and stimulating newborns, and supporting emergency procedures as directed by the CNM;
  • Return birth rooms to their original condition following patient discharge, including cleaning, restocking, sterilizing instruments, and removing waste and biohazard materials;
  • Report supplies that need to be ordered, equipment in need of repair, and other birth center needs as appropriate.

Requirements

  • A current, unencumbered DC Registered Nurse license is required;
  • Experience attending at least 20 labors and births is mandatory, with out-of-hospital births being a plus;
  • Valid CPR and NRP certifications are essential;
  • Completion of a skills test is required before the first day of employment;
  • A commitment to working with underserved populations is necessary;
  • Ability to work in a non-profit environment is expected;
  • Proof of required vaccinations is required, including Flu and Covid, subject to applicable law.

  • 8-hour workdays with a paid lunch break;
  • 11.5 paid company holidays, 1 personal floating holiday, 15 days of paid vacation (increasing to 20 after 3 years of service), and 12 days of paid sick leave annually;
  • Annual performance-based raises, up to 5% of your annual pay;
  • National Health Service Corps (NHSC) and DC Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (DCHPLRP) participants;
  • Tuition reimbursement, loan repayment for clinicians, licensing reimbursement, and continuing education unit funds for licensed staff;
  • Many opportunities for internal promotions and transfers across the agency;
  • Ongoing internal leadership training for supervisors;
