Role Purpose

This role is integral to the Violence Prevention Villages (VPV) initiative, which aims to deliver positive, proactive, and preventive support services to youth from Pre-K to 8th grade and their families. BUILD collaborates with educational institutions to enhance behavioral, social/emotional, and academic outcomes for students, while also engaging with the nonprofit sector to promote household stability and well-being. We are committed to supporting youth and families for as long as they are willing, with the goal of fostering long-term well-being, educational success, and economic stability across generations.

Key Responsibilities

The Youth Empowerment Advocate (YEA) will engage with students in both academic and extracurricular settings, particularly focusing on at-risk youth who may face behavioral challenges. The YEA will:

  • Collaborate closely with school administration for student referrals and recruitment.
  • Establish trusting relationships to identify challenges and implement solutions through trauma-informed care.
  • Design, prepare, and deliver engaging lesson plans and instructional materials that promote active learning.
  • Apply Social Emotional Learning strategies to address behavioral issues while establishing guidelines, expectations, mutual respect, and accountability.
  • Facilitate workshops on life skills and health awareness.
  • Promote Restorative Justice practices as alternatives to traditional disciplinary measures, fostering educational success.
  • Utilize a youth-driven and strengths-based approach for goal setting and service planning.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records in both internal and external databases weekly, and document intakes and assessments as required.
  • Submit lesson plans, statistics, and reports to the Program Manager bi-weekly or as needed.
  • Collect baseline and year-end data on academic, interpersonal, and prosocial behaviors.
  • Ensure compliance with file management and internal Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) requirements.
  • Build and maintain relationships with various stakeholders, including schools, government agencies, and community organizations.
  • Identify positive adult/youth influences to strengthen the support network for participants.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills tailored to diverse audiences and purposes.
  • Represent the organization positively to enhance community awareness and support for our programs and services.
  • Encourage family engagement through events such as Family Nights and Family Fridays.
  • Participate in outreach and recruitment activities, including evenings and weekends.
  • Engage in civic activities that align with the mission of BUILD, Inc.
  • Stay informed about current trends in the field and the agency's methodologies and best practices.
  • Attend departmental and agency-wide meetings and events as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's Degree in Social Services, Human Services, Non-Profit Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of experience working with urban youth in a human services or social services environment preferred.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and document educational and workshop plans effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in integrating technology into daily program operations and evaluation systems.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks, develop work schedules, and monitor progress towards objectives.
  • Ability to cultivate positive working relationships internally and externally to achieve organizational goals.
  • Must possess a proactive, innovative, responsible, and assertive approach, along with integrity and the ability to inspire others.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and child abuse/neglect registry check.
  • Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally is required.
