Cupertino, California, United States Apple Inc. Full time

Apple Inc. is on the lookout for a passionate electrical engineer to join the Mac Engineering Team. In this role, you will contribute to concept and feature innovation, rapid prototyping, component selection, and seamless product integration. Our engineers leverage their expertise in computer system architecture, schematic design, both digital and analog circuits, power management, and high-speed signal integrity to create exceptional products for millions of users.

Role Overview

The Hardware Development Engineer will be integral to the Mac team. The selected candidate will be tasked with designing, implementing, testing, and troubleshooting electrical subsystems, as well as developing testing and failure analysis protocols to maintain high product quality. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Creating schematic designs, analyzing component datasheets, and coordinating the layout of complex multilayer PCBs, including HDI and fine pitch BGAs.
  2. Leading design trade-offs involving manufacturing, testing, thermal management, performance, reliability, battery longevity, and electrical considerations.
  3. Conducting prototype bring-up, debugging, functional verification, and electrical characterization using advanced laboratory equipment such as 25 GHz oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and BERT scopes to assess the quality and robustness of electrical designs.
  4. Reviewing designs for factory test fixtures and analyzing large-scale data to optimize signal parameters for maximum margin, ensuring that manufacturing test plans provide comprehensive coverage for correct assembly.
  5. Troubleshooting manufacturing issues, providing feedback on root causes, and implementing corrective actions in design or manufacturing processes in preparation for high-volume production.
  6. Estimating and planning design timelines to meet strict schedules, while effectively communicating and presenting updates on concurrent critical issues and timelines.
  7. Willingness to travel to international contract manufacturers (approximately 5 weeks per year).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or computer engineering is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Proficiency in schematic and PCB physical design using Cadence Concept, Allegro, or similar CAD tools.
  • Experience in digital logic design, simulation, power conversion, high-speed serial and memory interfaces, along with fundamental knowledge of signal integrity design and measurement techniques using oscilloscopes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience, preferably in high-volume consumer electronics systems.
  • Hands-on laboratory skills with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and electronic loads.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Familiarity with command line interfaces and scripting.
  • Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas is advantageous: CPU or GPU microarchitecture, battery technology, power management, analog design, audio systems, wireless technologies, DisplayPort, PCIe, Thunderbolt, USB, SPI, I2C, UART, analog sensors, and interconnects.
  • Experience with statistical data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., JMP) is a plus.
