Job Title: Mechanic

Join the City of Clovis, NM team as a skilled Mechanic to perform maintenance and repairs on gas and diesel power equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Repair hydraulic systems, including hoses, pistons, seals, and pumps.
  • Repair brake systems on light to heavy-duty equipment, including brake shoes, discs, and master cylinders.
  • Perform basic welding and fabrication, including bumper, braces, clutch rods, construction equipment, and blades.
  • Diagnose problems to determine the best, most cost-effective, and feasible way to repair equipment using existing parts and tools.
  • Perform mechanical maintenance and repairs on both gasoline and diesel power engines.
  • Repair gearboxes on heavy equipment, replacing gears, bearings, shafts, and other components.
  • Make road calls to perform minor and major repairs on equipment or tow as necessary.
  • Provide written and oral reports to the Superintendent and Certified Mechanic.
  • Assist other departments with tasks when instructed by the Superintendent.
  • Operate hydraulic hose crimping machines, front-end alignment, air condition reclaimers, vacuum pumps, 2- and 4-post hoists, air impact equipment, wheel balancers, fuel injection tune-up kits, and tire breakdown machines.
  • Perform basic low-voltage electrical repairs.
  • Use all shop power tools and equipment, including grinders, drill presses, cutting torches, and brake lathes.
  • Drive various vehicles and equipment.
  • Wash and clean designated city vehicles when instructed.
  • Work under the supervision of a Certified Mechanic.
  • Assist other employees in the performance of their duties.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of specialized schooling and technical training in automotive and diesel engines.
  • Two years of hands-on experience in automotive vehicles, light and heavy trucks, and heavy equipment and diesel engine maintenance.
  • Six months of hands-on and technical schooling and training in hydraulic systems and repairs or troubleshooting hydraulic systems.
  • One year of technical training and hands-on experience in automotive electrical repairs and troubleshooting and on-board computer systems and diagnostic work.
Licenses and Certificates:
  • Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, automotive A/C, computer modules, hydraulics, and brakes on both vehicles, large trucks, and equipment.
  • Skills in safe operation of small equipment, including tire bailers, skid steers, loaders, and other hand tools.
  • Ability to perform functions with minimal supervision, understand and follow basic safety precautions, rules, and regulations, establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
Physical Requirements:
  • Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, and squatting.
  • Pushing, pulling, and lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions:
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services.
  • Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
  • Essential duties are predominantly performed indoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
  • Employee is exposed to airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
  • Use of safety shoes, glasses, and other equipment is required.
