Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas to detect and deter criminal activity, monitor radio calls, and inspect trouble spots.
  • Investigate crimes, disturbances, and complaints, interview witnesses, gather evidence, and transport it to the lab.
  • Serve legal papers, explain their meaning, and make arrests when necessary.
  • Prepare various reports, forms, and records, including case files, offense reports, and accident reports.
  • Handle citizen complaints and inquiries, transport prisoners and mental patients, and serve mental papers.
  • Investigate accidents, perform first aid, secure and clear accident scenes, and direct traffic.
  • Conduct building checks, report traffic hazards, and process minor crime scenes.
  • Monitor vehicle speeds with radar, conduct criminal and driving checks, and issue summons for violations.
  • Conduct surveillance using relevant techniques, assist state and federal agencies in investigations, and prepare affidavits and search warrants.
  • Teach programs based on topic areas of assigned units, prepare visual aids, lesson plans, and handouts, and participate in extracurricular activities.
  • Perform duties related to the recruitment of new officers, coordinate and participate in training sessions, administer physical agility tests, and conduct background checks.
  • Answer confidential crime line public access phone calls, provide reports to crime stoppers international, and maintain records of calls received and numbers called.
  • Act as media contact, provide interviews and materials to the media, and attend major media functions.
  • Order and issue uniforms and equipment for departmental personnel, process arrest information, and update communications division files.
  • Retrieve warrants from magistrate's office and courts, assign warrant numbers, log warrants in warrant books, and prepare cards for communications division files.
  • Coordinate policing efforts with civic leagues and community groups, attend civic league and PTA meetings, participate in community functions, and act as liaison between schools and the Police Department.
  • Monitor interior and exterior of school buildings, develop a rapport between police and students to deter crime in schools, and prepare brochures and other documents to promote the Police Department.
  • Counsel teachers, students, parents, and others, maintain security during school events, teach boating safety, and conduct marine patrol.
  • Provide security services for city-owned facilities, council meetings, city functions, and escort services for city personnel, organize and conduct security assessment drills, and develop, implement, and maintain physical security systems for city-owned facilities.
  • Maintain security access databases, assist with issuance of new security cards, and provide miscellaneous administrative and support assistance to the Police Department.
  • Develop and update emergency plans, conduct CEPTED analysis of facilities and office spaces, and conduct security awareness programs for employees.
  • Work in conjunction with Risk Management on items of shared interest, escort funeral processions, parades, public figures, and other special assignments, and coordinate traffic patterns.
  • Investigate communicable diseases and exposure, coordinate initial and follow-up medical care for exposed employees, maintain medical records, testing, and training, and assist disabled motorists with simple repair work, provide directions, and answer simple inquiries.
  • Report unsafe conditions in city streets, sidewalks, public facilities, and participate in special public information programs, such as seat belt safety campaigns, child fingerprinting projects, and speak at public and community functions, prepare classes for community participation, and notify next of kin of deaths and accidents.
  • Train and supervise new officers in the field, act as general instructor for the Police Academy, maintain police vehicles and issued equipment, and maintain proficiency in skilled use of firearms.

Requirements
  • Graduation from high school and one to two years of experience in law enforcement work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must be a Certified Virginia police officer or able to gain reciprocity.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a negative 3 or higher point value (or equivalent).
  • Must complete 40 hours of in-service training every two years.

  • Optional Life Insurance: Employees have the option of electing additional life insurance coverage in the amount of 1, 2, 3, or 4 times their annual salary.
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA): 12 weeks of job-protected leave for leaves approved in accordance with the Family Medical Leave Act.
  • Funeral Leave: 24 hours of paid leave of absence in case of death in immediate family.
  • Holidays: The City of Suffolk follows the Virginia State holiday calendar as set by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
