Position Overview

Work Schedule

Phlebotomy Technicians will work at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth during weekdays, with hours ranging from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Shifts may vary daily, lasting between 2 to 12 hours, with a mandatory 30-minute unpaid lunch for shifts over 6 hours. Weekend availability may be required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood specimens from patients and conduct various Point of Care Testing (POCT).
  • Ensure accurate patient identification and proper labeling of samples.
  • Determine the most effective blood draw method based on individual patient needs.
  • Transport specimens to designated laboratory areas efficiently.
  • Centrifuge blood samples as necessary.
  • Work with a diverse patient population, adapting to varying ages and health conditions.
  • Adhere to Infection Control standards and maintain safety protocols.
  • Follow OSHA regulations and utilize Personal Protective Equipment appropriately.
  • Complete extensive training in laboratory procedures and demonstrate competency in all assigned tasks.
  • Provide guidance and training as needed when designated as a Preceptor or instructor.
Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of a phlebotomy program with a minimum of 120 didactic hours.
  • Certifications: Certification or registration as required by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), in addition to Basic Life Support certification.
  • Experience: A minimum of 1040 hours of experience as a Phlebotomy Technician within the last three years, including at least 100 successful venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.
  • References: Two letters of recommendation, dated within the last two years, attesting to clinical skills, with at least one from a physician or supervisor.
