Job Summary:
The Bay Correctional Facility is seeking a highly skilled Canine Instructor to oversee the inmate-led canine training program. This position requires a strong background in canine handling and training, as well as excellent leadership and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily training activities and ensure compliance with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, Correctional Education Association (CEA), Management & Training Corporation (MTC), Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) and Florida Department of Management Services (DMS) directives.
- Coordinate formal training with outside professional trainers and maintain participation and community service hours.
- Report and document activity and/or events in the Offender Data System (ODS).
- Plan activities that meet program objectives and ensure participants are using approved curriculum materials.
- Report to partnering agencies involved with the program, including the behavior and progress of canines.
- Order food and supplies involved in the program.
- Report directly to the Deputy Warden of Programs, providing regular updates on program success, barriers, individual student needs, and budgetary requirements.
- Interact with community partners and promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
- Maintain accountability of staff, inmates, and property, adhering to safety practices.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years' experience with canine handling and training preferred.
- Valid driver's license in the state of Florida with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
- Ability to travel and transport canines from the facility to training centers.
Post-Hire Requirements:
- Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements.
