This examination is exclusively available to current District employees who fulfill the promotional criteria. Applications from outside candidates will not be accepted.

Applications will be considered only during the specified filing period for this examination. The opening and closing dates for the filing period will be communicated in this announcement.

Application Submission:
Applications must be submitted online through the District's Online Employment Center. To be considered, applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central Time on the closing date.

It is important to note that the deadline for application submission will not be extended due to any unavailability of the District's Online Employment Center.

The District will not be held responsible for any downtime of the Online Employment Center, and it is the applicant's responsibility to ensure timely completion and submission of the application form. Therefore, early submission is highly recommended.



Applicant Responsibility: It is the applicant's duty to ensure that the application form is filled out completely and submitted in a timely manner as outlined above.

Eligibility Anticipation: An applicant who can show the likelihood of meeting the required years of service and civil service status with the District in one of the necessary job classifications by the anticipated date may be allowed to participate in the examination process. Candidates admitted under this provision, who succeed in the examination, may not be appointed until proof is provided that these requirements were met by the anticipated date. Employees cannot hold civil service status in more than one classification. Thus, achieving civil service status in the classification relevant to this announcement will result in the loss of eligibility for promotional examinations stemming from civil service status in any previous classification.

Veterans' Preference: Veterans' Preference points will be added, in accordance with District regulations, to the scores of candidates who achieve a passing score in all examination phases. Veterans' Preference claim forms can be obtained through the District's website or requested at the testing site. An employee who receives a promotion from an eligible list on which they received Veterans' Preference points will not be eligible for such points on any future promotional examinations.

Probationary Period: The probationary period for this classification is one year (250 days worked).

Promotional - Examination Details

Key Responsibilities: Under general supervision, oversees the operations of a small laboratory; and/or conducts chemical research and analysis pertaining to water, sewage, industrial wastes, and other materials.

Promotional Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, or a degree in biological sciences with significant coursework in chemistry. One year of service with the District as an Assistant Environmental Chemist, Senior Laboratory Technician, or Senior Environmental Research Technician. Civil service status in one of the aforementioned classifications.

Examination Structure: The examination will comprise a written test weighted at 90%, an efficiency rating weighted at 5%, and a seniority rating weighted at 5%. The minimum passing score on the written test will be 70%, unless otherwise determined by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each component to have their names placed on the eligible list.

The written test will evaluate candidates' knowledge, skills, and abilities in areas such as basic chemistry, including solutions and topics related to wastewater sample analysis; operation and troubleshooting of analytical instruments commonly used in wastewater laboratories; data accuracy review; supervising, mentoring, and managing subordinate staff; and adherence to laboratory safety protocols and operation of standard laboratory safety equipment.



Examination Notification: All applicants will be notified via email regarding their admission to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application should contact the Employee Selection Office.

WRITTEN TEST:

The written test will be conducted at a designated location. Candidates should arrive with the approved admission letter and a form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops, or other aids during the test is prohibited.



Promotional - Appointment Process


Appointments will be made from an eligible list categorized into three groups: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified), and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will receive priority for appointment. This examination is also available for Original Entrance candidates.

In cases where both Original Entrance and Promotional eligible lists arise from an examination process, the District's practice is to appoint only from the Promotional eligible list until all names from that list have been considered.

The eligible list remains valid for three years.
