Key Responsibilities
1. Oversight of Early Childhood and Camp Programs
- Lead the design, execution, and assessment of educational initiatives for children, families, and caregivers, focusing on connecting diverse communities to nature and scientific learning.
- Manage both in-zoo and community-based nature play programs, preschool collaborations, family engagement efforts, educator training, and seasonal camps, including the Zoo's Summer Safari program. Collaborate with the Conservation Learning Manager: School and Teacher Partnerships to support school programming.
- Establish partnerships with learning centers and organizations that serve diverse populations, particularly those traditionally underrepresented in nature and conservation education.
- Recruit, train, assess, and promote the professional growth of staff; coordinate goal setting, performance evaluations, and time management; provide constructive feedback.
- Ensure the ongoing enhancement and implementation of practices that bolster staff and volunteer confidence, preparedness, and effectiveness in facilitating programs aligned with departmental priorities, emphasizing best practices in engaging young learners, families, and caregivers in wildlife conservation education and action.
- Guide and mentor staff in program development and continuous improvement using the Zoo's outcomes-based program development framework (ROADMAP).
- As a member of the Conservation Learning leadership team, collaborate with fellow leaders to achieve departmental goals, employing strategic thinking, proactive problem-solving, and inclusive decision-making to shape the direction of the department and its mission-driven programming.
- Promote a positive team culture through effective communication and support activities designed to welcome, include, and recognize all team members.
- Provide additional support as assigned by the Director of Conservation Learning to further the overall objectives of the department and organization. DZCA reserves the right to modify duties and responsibilities as needed.
- Supervise a small team of staff, fostering their growth through goal setting, performance evaluations, and constructive feedback.
- Collaborate with department leaders to propose an annual budget for the program area. Oversee financial management for the program area and ensure responsible stewardship of DZCA's resources. Work in partnership with the Director of Conservation Learning and Philanthropy teams to identify new funding opportunities.
- This position requires safeguarding against the disclosure of confidential and proprietary information of DZCA.
- Interact with managers at all levels and staff across the organization, as well as external organizations and the public, representing DZCA in a professional and positive manner.
- Completion or pursuit of a 2-year degree in education, environmental education, or a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in environmental education within a nonprofit zoo, museum, or science institution, with a focus on early childhood and elementary education; experience working with diverse communities is strongly preferred, or any equivalent combination of experience, lived experience, and/or special skills.
- Ability to foster a welcoming environment and cohesive team while providing direction and guidance to a diverse group of staff and volunteers.
- Demonstrated understanding of current best practices in education, particularly in outcomes-based program development, nature play, inquiry, empathy development, and conservation optimism.
- Proven skills in program development, teaching, and mentoring both children and adults, with preference given to candidates with successful experience in informal biological or conservation education settings.
- Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills, attention to detail, customer service orientation, and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Adaptability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment, and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Strong negotiation skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion are preferred. Must be an exceptional communicator and a developer of people, comfortable motivating and collaborating with a diverse range of individuals.
- Experience applying an equitable analysis to all duties to achieve organizational goals and demonstrate DZCA's commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, and anti-racism is preferred.
