The Town of Apex North Carolina is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Assistant Director of Electric Operations. This position is responsible for overseeing and directing the Operations, Forestry and Technical Services division of the Electric Utilities Department.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee management group (Operations, Forestry and Technical Services) by ensuring daily activities meet department objectives.
- Handle responsibilities of key management positions within the department, including the Director when necessary.
- Serve as a liaison between the Director and the management team on important issues.
- Spearhead annual budget formation and ensure capital budget requests meet organizational goals.
- Develop long-range infrastructure plans for the electric system to ensure adequate capacity.
- Research and recommend operational changes to the Electric Director.
- Plan, organize, and monitor contracted work.
- Coordinate projects with engineers and contractors.
- Consult with division managers on personnel actions.
- Conduct staff meetings to keep staff informed and up-to-date on projects.
- Meet frequently with subordinate supervisors to solve complex problems, set priorities, and provide guidance and direction.
- Oversee special studies related to delivering electric power.
- Engage with citizens concerning complaints, assist staff with investigations, and decide or recommend actions.
- Prepare citizen communication materials and attend Town Council meetings as necessary.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in a technical discipline, electrical preferred.
- A minimum of seven years of experience in a managerial position within a public or municipal electric utility, including considerable supervisory experience.
- Thorough knowledge of electric engineering principles, practices, and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electric distribution administration, planning, and design.
- Thorough knowledge of construction materials, techniques, and methods for construction on utility projects.
- Thorough knowledge of North Carolina public contracting statutes.
- Ability to understand projects and prepare related designs, estimates, and specifications.
- Ability to analyze difficult engineering computations and make recommendations on engineering problems.
- General knowledge of management practice and theory.
- General knowledge of governmental accounting, personnel, and purchasing practices.
- Ability to formulate comprehensive operational policies and procedures.
- Ability to prepare complex technical reports.
- Ability to supervise staff, including skill in counseling, coaching, motivating, communicating, and conducting performance evaluations.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, other public officials, employees, contractors, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to make presentations.
