# Project Overview:

Bechtel is engaged in the design, construction, and commissioning of the largest radioactive-waste treatment facility for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington State. This project employs advanced vitrification technology to manage and stabilize 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste, a legacy of historical plutonium production.

This cleanup initiative represents one of the DOE's most complex technical challenges, comparable to the construction of two nuclear power plants. The expansive construction site encompasses 65 acres and includes various facilities for waste treatment and analytical processes, alongside essential operational and maintenance buildings.

**Initially, the position requires full-time presence in the Richland, Washington project office, with potential for part-time telework flexibility thereafter. The role follows a 9/80 work schedule, providing every other Friday off.**

# Job Summary:

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the structural design aspects of the project. Your responsibilities will include the development and verification of intricate structural calculations, specifications, material requisitions, and technical reports. You will also be involved in reviewing design drawings, coordinating vendor information, and leading technical discussions and constructability assessments. #LI-SB1

# Major Responsibilities:

+ Develop and verify complex structural engineering deliverables, including calculations for steel and concrete, specifications, and material requisitions.

+ Review and coordinate technical documentation with other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction teams.

+ Prepare technical reports addressing specific design challenges.

+ Manage designated project activities effectively.

+ Participate in constructability assessments.

+ Support construction efforts by addressing field change requests and nonconformance reports.

+ Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers.

+ Schedule and coordinate off-project review requirements for engineering deliverables.

+ Lead and engage in technical discussions with clients, suppliers, and construction teams.

# Education and Experience Requirements:

+ **Level 1:** Requires a bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering from an accredited institution and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of applicable work experience.

+ **Level 2:** Requires a bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering from an accredited institution and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of applicable work experience.

+ Prior experience in a Nuclear Quality and Safety Environment is essential.

+ Candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, physical examination (if applicable), and background check, including verification of employment and education.

+ Eligibility to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site is required.

+ Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.

# Required Knowledge and Skills:

**Minimum:**

+ Ability to independently execute detailed designs for complex steel and/or concrete structures.

+ Comprehensive knowledge of the AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, and ASCE 7.

+ Proficiency in structural analysis software such as GTSTRUDL or SAP 2000.

+ Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.

+ In-depth understanding of engineering deliverables, including drawings, specifications, and material requisitions, as well as construction methods for concrete and steel structures.

+ Capacity to resolve design challenges collaboratively with subordinates, suppliers, and other engineering disciplines.

# Preferred:

+ Proficiency in Mathcad or similar software is advantageous.

+ Thorough knowledge of ACI 349, AISC N690, ASCE 4-98, ASCE 7, and IBC codes is preferred.
