Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Database Analyst to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our IT department, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and managing our database resources and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the design and development of new databases, ensuring high levels of data quality and integrity.
  • Modify existing databases and database management systems, testing programs or databases and correcting errors.
  • Develop, test, and implement SQL program code and application code for use with databases.
  • Define, review, and implement database backup and recovery strategies to ensure data safety and availability.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement appropriate security measures to safeguard databases against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification, or disclosure.
  • Monitor performance of application programs with respect to associated databases and perform required performance tuning actions to ensure database stability and efficiency.
  • Work with application development staff to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures.
  • Develop long-term goals for production databases in conjunction with data owners and department managers.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Analyze user requirements for reports, forms, queries, and data extraction.
  • Develop and deploy end-user practices and tools for data extraction, queries, and data manipulation in accordance with business processes.
  • Create and document models for new database development and/or changes to existing ones through data flowcharting and entity relationship diagrams.
Requirements
  • Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in information technology, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • Full-time paid experience in database development and/or administration may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • A Microsoft MCITP SQL Server certification may be substituted for one year of the required education.
Working Conditions

This position is performed in a typical office environment and requires the use of standard office equipment, including computers.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and methodologies relating to database design, control, administration, and usage in support of application systems.
  • Knowledge of the operating characteristics and limitations of common computer hardware and software utilized by the District.
  • Skill in writing SQL scripts for queries.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve operational issues related to databases.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
