Streamlined Process: As a Lateral or Academy Graduate applicant, you will be exempt from the written examination and physical agility test.
Out-of-State lateral candidates will be assessed individually, but must complete the California POST Waiver course within the last three years as a minimum requirement.
The Irvine Police Department employs a geographic policing model that promotes community engagement, strategic partnerships, and innovative problem-solving. As a Police Officer, your responsibilities will include patrolling assigned areas and responding to calls or complaints while taking appropriate action.

Bilingual Officers receive 2%

Detectives, SROs, Traffic, and DARE Officers receive 6%
Advanced POST certification adds 15.5% (combined with Intermediate)
K9 Unit members earn 7.2%
Annual Health and Wellness Benefit of $1,000 and Equipment Reimbursement of $300
Your Responsibilities:
- Investigate crimes against individuals or property, execute arrests, and enforce traffic laws.
- Prepare police reports, provide testimony in court, and carry out other law enforcement duties.
- Engage closely with various community segments.
- Maintain familiarity with local ordinances, state laws, regulations, and City procedures.
- Complete a Field Training Officer (FTO) program to prepare for patrol duties in designated areas.

- POST certification or prior experience as a California Peace Officer is required.
- High school diploma or equivalent, completion of 60 college-level units or an AA degree, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid California driver license.

The City of Irvine operates a comprehensive public safety agency that encompasses various specialized program areas, including Emergency Management, Crime Prevention, DARE, School Resource Officer, K-9 units, Traffic Enforcement, General Investigation, Crime Scene Investigation, Special Investigation (vice & narcotics), and the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT). The Selection Process
The selection process will include an expedited oral examination and a background investigation prior to appointment. All applicants must successfully pass the Public Safety background check process, which includes a review of legal documents, police and driving records, credit profiles, motor vehicle insurance, vehicle operation, prior employment records, and performance evaluations.
