General Overview

The role involves executing a range of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance tasks and utilizing various equipment for the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of municipal streets and stormwater systems, including landscaping responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

This outline is not exhaustive but provides a representative summary of primary duties and responsibilities. The incumbent may be required to perform all listed tasks and additional, position-specific functions.

- Assist in the repair or installation of stormwater and irrigation systems and their components.

- Conduct ground maintenance activities such as planting, mowing, sodding, and weeding.

- Sweep pathways and eliminate refuse and debris from grounds, waste containers, buildings, and parking areas.

- Operate maintenance machinery including pickup trucks, riding lawn mowers, weed eaters, and related tools.

- Engage in manual labor and other minor tasks as needed.

- Aid in the repair of dips, potholes, and other road obstructions, including asphalt replacement as necessary.

- Clear municipal canals, catch basins, and drains of debris as required.

- Assist in the upkeep and repair of city sidewalks and curbing.

- Operate various power equipment as necessary for the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic understanding of equipment materials, methods, and procedures utilized in ground maintenance, stormwater management, or street maintenance, depending on the job location.

- Proficient in the operation of required tools and equipment.

- Capability to perform strenuous manual tasks for extended durations. Ability to work safely and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, and the public. Ability to comprehend and execute written and verbal instructions.

- Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump trucks, skid loaders, chainsaws, and other tools is preferred.

Education & Experience Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent. One (1) year of experience in ground maintenance/landscaping, stormwater management, or street maintenance, depending on the job location. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver License throughout employment.

While executing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands, fingers, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and communicate effectively. The employee occasionally is required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and detect odors.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is often exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations. The employee occasionally works in high or precarious places and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electrical hazards.

The noise level in the work environment is typically loud.

Benefits are available to FULL-TIME employees only.
The City of Miami Gardens offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 176 hours of Personal Time Off (PTO) in lieu of vacation and sick time and 12 paid holidays (11 holidays and 1 floating holiday).

The City participates in the retirement plan administered by the Florida Retirement System (FRS), which requires a mandatory 3% contribution.
