Job Summary:

The University of Hawai'i is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Academic Instructor. This is a part-time, non-tenurial role that requires teaching assigned courses in the discipline, maintaining office hours, and providing instruction and guidance to meet student learning objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach assigned courses in the discipline, including lectures, discussions, and laboratory sessions.
  • Maintain at least one office hour per week for each class taught, providing students with individualized attention and support.
  • Develop and implement course syllabi, lesson plans, and assessments that align with the University's curriculum standards.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to meet student learning objectives, including preparing students for assessments and evaluations.
  • Work under the supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson to integrate teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area.
  • Participate in student and peer evaluations, as well as self-assessment of teaching effectiveness.
  • Commit to the University's community college principles and philosophy, including a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Be available for evening and weekend teaching assignments, including teaching on campus, off-campus at military bases, secondary education sites, and/or distance learning assignments for courses taught via the internet.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in English, Literature, or Fine Arts (Creative Writing) is required.
  • Unless a related field is listed, the degree must be in the subject area. If qualified applicants are not available, those not meeting minimum qualifications may be considered on an exception basis.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience at the community college level is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with community college students, including those from diverse backgrounds and with varying learning styles.
  • Work experience related to the course to be taught is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with competency-based instruction and behavioral objectives is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse student populations, including those with disabilities and from underrepresented groups.
  • Experience in the use of technology to support instruction and student success, including learning management systems, customer relationship management software, early alert systems, and presentation software.
  • A willingness to adapt to new technology platforms and stay current with best practices in teaching and learning.
