Job Summary:

Provide peer support and transportation services to Safe Harbor clients, utilizing personal recovery experience to assist individuals in navigating systems for treatment services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery through one-to-one and group sessions.
  • Determine steps clients need to take to access treatment services and support them in addressing barriers.
  • Locate, join, and participate in self-help/support groups, such as NA, AA, and Celebrate Recovery.
  • Model and teach problem-solving techniques with individuals and groups.
  • Utilize recovery experience to assist clients in navigating systems for treatment services.
  • Work with referral sources to increase transitions of care to Safe Harbor service sites.
  • Complete outreach activities to bring community awareness to Safe Harbor services.
  • Teach and role model the value of every individual's recovery experience.
  • Assist clients in identifying barriers and directing them to community resources for self-sufficiency and social determinants of health outcomes.
  • Develop empowerment skills and combat stigma through self-advocacy.
  • Maintain professional and timely documentation in the electronic medical records system.
  • Stay current with trends and developments in substance use disorder and co-occurring disorders through reading and continuing education.
  • Provide transportation coordination and drive as needed to assist clients with prompt access to care and SUD treatment services.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Self-identified as a person living in recovery from substance use/co-occurring disorder.
  • Significant experience (36 months minimum) working on personal recovery and managing wellness.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Publicly identify as a person living in recovery to educate and role model for others.
  • Knowledge of the recovery process and ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized substance abuse and mental health processes.
  • Basic problem-solving strategies to support individual clients in self-directed recovery.
  • Good telephone etiquette and communication skills.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Safe From Harm training and current certification.
  • Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) or defined work plan to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Valid Michigan Chauffeur License and approved by The Salvation Army MVR.
