Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Nutria Eradication Operations Supervisor, the selected candidate will act as a principal field scientist for the Nutria Eradication Initiative. Nutria, known for their invasive nature, pose significant threats to ecological systems. This role is vital in overseeing field teams engaged in nutria population assessments and trapping efforts throughout the affected regions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in training, supervising, and evaluating field technicians and scientific aides in their efforts to locate and eliminate nutria populations.
  • Lead by example in conducting habitat assessments, visual surveys, trapping operations, and electronic data collection using modern applications.
  • Ensure effective use of baits and lures while securing necessary permissions from landowners.
  • Conduct daily briefings for field crews, monitor spatial assignments, and ensure adherence to project protocols.
  • Collaborate with Operations Supervisors and other specialists to refine detection and trapping methodologies.
  • Engage with various local, state, and federal agencies to ensure coordinated efforts in nutria management.
  • Prepare reports and respond to public inquiries regarding the department's nutria management strategies.

The geographical focus of this role encompasses multiple counties, with potential assignments in any area impacted by nutria. This position is physically demanding yet rewarding, contributing to the preservation of California's natural resources.

Working Conditions

  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and overnight travel.
  • Ability to navigate challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions.
  • Competence in using firearms and wildlife restraint equipment as per departmental policies.

Special Requirements

  • Capability to handle live animals and perform basic tissue sampling.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 40 pounds and operate various vehicles and watercraft.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License and willingness to obtain necessary certifications.
