The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Scientist to serve as a lead field scientist for the Nutria Eradication Program. This is a critical role that requires a strong background in wildlife management, ecology, and conservation biology.
Key Responsibilities- Lead field crews in conducting nutria surveys and trapping across the southern portion of the nutria infestation
- Assist in the coordination of field operations, including training, leading, and evaluating field crew technicians and scientific aides
- Conduct habitat suitability assessments, visual observation and camera surveys, trapping, and electronic data collection
- Develop and implement effective detection and trapping methods and tools for the most efficient removal of nutria
- Collaborate with other regions and Department functions, as well as other affected and involved local, State, and Federal agencies
- Prepare draft reports and correspondence and answer routine questions from the public relative to Departmental nutria efforts
- Master's degree in environmental science, wildlife management, ecology, or a related field
- At least 2 years of experience in wildlife management, ecology, or a related field
- Strong background in conservation biology, ecology, and wildlife management
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing circumstances
- Valid driver's license and ability to safely and effectively operate watercraft and UTVs
This position requires the ability to work in a variety of environments, including wetlands, forests, and agricultural areas. The incumbent must be willing and able to work atypical hours, including evenings and weekends, and be able to swim, walk through deep mud and thick vegetation, deal with mosquitoes, ticks, and other stinging/biting insects, rattlesnakes and other wildlife, and work on steep or uneven terrain, in extreme weather, and under physically challenging conditions.
