Position Summary
Responsible for delivering anesthesia support services throughout the medical center in conjunction with surgical and non-surgical procedures that necessitate anesthesia.
This includes, but is not limited to, the maintenance and care of anesthesia machines and specialized equipment, managing inventory of anesthesia gases, supplies, and equipment, assisting with patient care, and other responsibilities as outlined in Attachment A.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
- Independently performs the following responsibilities related to the care and operation of anesthesia machines and equipment, demonstrating skill, knowledge, efficiency, and accuracy:
b. Setting up specialized equipment as required.
c. Preparing, calibrating, and connecting monitoring equipment prior to patient care use.
d. Troubleshooting, maintaining, and servicing anesthesia equipment to ensure safe operation; obtaining vendor/biomedical servicing as necessary.
e. Maintaining inventory of anesthesia gases, supplies, and equipment.
f.
Adhering to manufacturer and hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines for the correct, economical, and safe use and care of equipment and supplies.
g. Recording accurate data associated with the care and use of anesthesia equipment and supplies.
- Under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist, assists with patient care in the following tasks:
b. Assisting with spinal and epidural catheter insertions.
c. Gathering supplies and setting up auto transfusion systems (cell saver).
d. Assisting with difficult intubations and dual lumen endotracheal tubes.
- Follows Infection Control guidelines and Standard Precautions while performing the following tasks:
b. Proper disposal of infectious waste.
c. Reprocessing reusable items in accordance with hospital policy and manufacturers' recommendations.
- Initiates and responds appropriately to emergency measures for cardiac/respiratory arrest.
- Coordinates new equipment installations and maintains awareness of new product adaptability and impact on anesthesia care through continuing education, seminars, and other communications.
- Demonstrates decision-making ability to determine the need for specific monitoring equipment based on individual patient care requirements.
- Participates in orienting new personnel to department, equipment, and role responsibilities.
- Collaborates and interacts with other surgical team members regarding patient care needs as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
- Two-year experience as anesthesia technician and extensive knowledge of anesthesia equipment required.
- High School Diploma or equivalency or evidence of higher education required.
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Anesthesia Tech certification or completed formal education from an Anesthesia Technology program preferred.
