Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist - Advanced Care Specialist will provide direct patient care through the provision of adequate ventilation and oxygenation using medical gases and breathing equipment. This role requires a high level of knowledge and skill to administer respiratory medications and perform invasive procedures, such as arterial blood sampling punctures, endotracheal intubation/extubation, tracheostomy care, and other procedures as outlined on the competency grid form.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assessment and Documentation
    • Perform and document detailed age-specific respiratory assessments, including heart rate, breath sounds, respiratory rate, and sputum characteristics.
    • Notify physicians of any identified abnormalities.
  • Medication Administration and Ventilation
    • Administer respiratory medications as ordered by physicians.
    • Initiate mechanical invasive and non-invasive ventilation per physician order.
    • Perform ventilator bundles on all ventilated patients.
  • Lab Testing and Procedures
    • Perform arterial sampling draws and moderate complexity lab testing, including blood gases, Hemoglobin, and basic electrolytes.
    • Verify panic values by policy.
  • Emergency Response and Critical Care
    • Respond to all assigned designated medical alerts.
    • Establish and maintain airways as needed.
  • Education and Collaboration
    • Assist physicians with bronchoscopy procedures as requested.
    • Document all assessments and procedures in the electronic medical record.
    • Collaborate with healthcare teams to identify and implement critical path/standard of care/plan of care.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Associate Degree graduate of a specialized training program in Respiratory Therapy or meets minimum requirements to qualify to take and pass the NBRC RRT examinations.
  • Experience
    • Successful completion of new hire orientation within the probationary period.
    • Must successfully complete annual Respiratory Care Hospital required competency assessment within the probationary period.
  • License/Registration/Certifications
    • Must be Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care with RRT credential.
    • Must have current South Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) License.
    • Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as a minimum.
    • Adult critical care requires ACLS and PALS if applicable.
    • NICU/Pediatrics area requires NRP and PALS certifications; STABLE certification is preferred if applicable.
    • Must opt into the National Board of Respiratory Care's searchable registry for the duration of employment with SRHS.
