Job Summary

The Senior Underwriting Manager will be responsible for guiding, mentoring, and coaching a team of Environmental Underwriters. This role contributes to the growth and profitability of the company through marketing, underwriting, and managing the Environmental production underwriters. The Senior Underwriting Manager is responsible for budget, marketing, risk assessment, and broker management for the group.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership: Formally guides, mentors, and coaches underwriters in both technical and professional skills. Responsible for talent processes including selection, development, and performance management, and makes compensation recommendations for assigned staff.
  • Service Value Proposition: Understands and articulates the specialized services Liberty Mutual can offer our Environmental liability Insureds and how they compare to those provided by our competitors.
  • Documenting the Deal: Direct reports documents files in a way that reflects a solid thought process and decision making through comprehensive account reviews, signoffs, and referrals.
  • Continuous Improvement: Actively participates in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles, generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem-solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.
  • Marketing: Contributes to the development of marketing plans, product analysis, services, geographic focus, and broker intelligence. Establishes and maintains broker strategy building relationships to facilitate the marketing of Environmental Liability products.
  • Effective Communication: Collaborates with other product line underwriters, managers, and claims analysts in order to provide comprehensive customer service.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training plus at least 5 to 7 years of relevant and progressively more responsible production Underwriting experience.
  • Requires 1-2 years of previous people management/supervisory experience.
  • Requires an advanced knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, procedures, and techniques, including, but not limited to, coverage issues, product lines, marketing, computers, and product competition within the marketplace.
  • Advanced knowledge of Environmental Liability products.
  • The ability to effectively interact with brokers and internal departments.
  • Strong verbal and written communications, and organizational skills.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Degree in Business or equivalent.
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate high-impact underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information.
