Position Overview

MedStar Health is seeking a Lead Radiation Therapy Specialist to oversee operations at our radiation oncology facility.

As the Lead Radiation Therapy Specialist, you will manage the daily technical functions of the radiation oncology department. You will supervise the team of radiation therapists, collaborating with physicians and administrative staff to ensure efficient operations and timely patient care. You will also assist the Technical Director in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures to meet departmental and organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain comprehensive records of simulation, treatment delivery, and billing processes. Demonstrate proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Ensure treatment and simulation rooms are well-stocked and organized. Report and document any malfunctions of treatment units or simulators. Directly oversee the radiation therapy team, working closely with physicians, technical directors, physicists, and dosimetrists to implement new protocols and technologies. Ensure all staff are knowledgeable about and comply with RadAmerica Technical and EMR policies. Verify accuracy in patient billing for therapy and simulation services. Support the Technical Director and Chief Physicist/CTIO.
  • Promote quality improvement initiatives. Assist the Technical Director in gathering data for annual outcome studies, interviewing candidates, and evaluating staff performance. Conduct preliminary evaluations of team members. Develop internal processes to enhance workflow efficiency. Actively engage in quality assurance procedures and ensure the team completes weekly chart reviews. Perform dose verifications in accordance with established protocols and document findings. Assign weekly chart rounds for all patients and verify weekly SSDs. Capture necessary portal images for all patients. Conduct monthly technical peer reviews and summaries. Report any issues with morning quality assurance or equipment to physicists and clinical engineers. Provide regular reports to the department and submit them to the Technical Director. Oversee scheduling for all simulation and treatment appointments.
  • Operate the CT simulator and associated equipment. Execute duties related to ultrasound, high-dose rate (HDR) treatments, and mold room activities. Maintain credentialing for various procedures including catheterizations and contrast imaging. Consistently implement Time Out procedures and inform patients about what to expect during their treatments. Fabricate immobilization devices and ensure all necessary documentation is completed prior to procedures. Utilize the EMR policy and procedure manual effectively.
  • Communicate with physicians regarding appointment cancellations and document these in the EMR. Collaborate with physicians, physicists, and the technical director to implement new policies and technologies. Relay staff concerns to the technical director effectively. Complete all required forms for students and visitors and forward them to the technical director. Conduct evaluations for student clinical performance. Facilitate orientation and training for new staff members. Assist the technical director in evaluating new associates to ensure they possess the necessary skills for their roles.
  • Operate linear accelerators and administer radiation therapy treatments following safety guidelines. Provide ongoing patient education regarding skin care, dietary considerations, treatment side effects, and expected reactions. Reinforce the physician's advice and educate patients on what to anticipate during their daily treatments. Perform hand calculations and RadCalc dose verifications.
Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in Radiation Therapy Technology or graduation from an accredited Radiation Therapy program.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive clinical experience.
  • ARRT Certification.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Maryland Board of Physicians License with 'O' or 'M' prefix as a Radiation Therapist and/or Radiographer.
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred.
