Trauma Quality Improvement Specialist

Position Overview

The Trauma Quality Improvement Specialist is accountable for the precise, prompt, and thorough collection, coding, and entry of data for all patients with injuries that meet the criteria set by state or national trauma standards. This role necessitates close collaboration with Trauma Program Leadership and other stakeholders to assess the performance improvement and patient safety initiatives related to injured individuals. The specialist will coordinate efforts to identify issues, promote effective solutions, enhance clinical outcomes for trauma patients, and fulfill the objectives of the trauma center.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage databases, perform data analysis, compile statistics, and generate reports to communicate findings while ensuring confidentiality.

• Collect, abstract, enter, and analyze trauma patient data as mandated by regulatory agencies overseeing trauma care.

• Utilize ICD-10 and AIS coding systems for injury and procedure coding.

• Uphold the integrity of the trauma registry to satisfy verification requirements of the trauma center.

• Process data requests from the trauma registry as needed.

• Identify opportunities for improvement in EMR fields to accurately reflect trauma registry data points and collaborate with relevant departments for implementation.

• Actively engage in Trauma Program meetings.

• Facilitate performance improvement initiatives, including data collection, analysis, trending, and benchmarking of outcomes, using established trauma guidelines and audit indicators through concurrent and retrospective medical record reviews and discussions with staff.

• Participate in patient rounds to gather insights, maintain visibility, and assess adherence to trauma standards and guidelines.

• Leverage clinical expertise to aggregate, assess, and interpret information to evaluate the quality of clinical care and review appropriate services.

• Identify, validate, analyze issues, and initiate follow-up to ensure resolution that enhances clinical outcomes and patient care.

• Assist with trauma-related performance improvement projects and educational initiatives aimed at enhancing trauma patient care quality.

• Maintain the trauma performance improvement database to ensure comprehensive documentation and the ability to generate effective reports and track issues over time.

• Serve as a resource for patients, families, nursing staff, ancillary services, physicians, and others to provide optimal care for trauma patients.

• May engage in direct patient care for trauma patients utilizing specialized training and education.

• Coordinate and participate in trauma performance improvement forums and committees.

• Facilitate follow-up communications with facilities that transfer trauma patients.

• Support administrative, outreach, injury prevention, and research initiatives.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

• Current Registered Nurse licensure in Idaho or eligibility for licensure.

• Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in emergency, trauma, or critical care; 5 years preferred in an American College of Surgeons verified level II trauma center.

• Previous charge nurse or leadership experience preferred.

• Certification in Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) and/or Advanced Trauma Course for Nurses (ATCN) required within 6 months of hire; instructor certification preferred.

• Completion of Trauma Care after Resuscitation (TCAR) within 1 year of hire.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

• Completion of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine's Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) Course required within 18 months of hire.

• Maintain at least 24 hours of trauma-related continuing education during the trauma center verification cycle.

Working Conditions

• Ability to maintain a standing position.

• Typical clinical and office equipment usage.

• Must be able to lift or move up to 35 lbs.

• Must be able to push, pull, or transport heavy equipment.
