Position Overview:

We are seeking a talented and seasoned culinary professional to join our team at the New York Botanical Garden. In the role of Sous Chef, you will have the chance to share your culinary expertise while overseeing and engaging in the preparation, seasoning, and cooking of a variety of dishes including salads, soups, seafood, meats, vegetables, desserts, and more.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Craft menus that align with consumer preferences, nutritional requirements, and budgetary guidelines; engage in menu planning activities including determining purchasing specifications, product testing, and recipe development.
  • Uphold production, safety, and sanitation standards consistently.
  • Lead and participate in the daily preparation of both standard and gourmet food items.
  • Assess the quality of raw ingredients and ensure the excellence of finished dishes.
  • Conduct inspections of assigned areas to monitor food preparation quality, presentation, and cleanliness of production and service zones, as well as employee appearance.
  • Execute culinary production for special events, menu variations, and catered functions.
  • Oversee and assist in the preparation and presentation of menu items for special occasions.
  • Maintain effective inventory management for food, supplies, and equipment. Recruit, train, and evaluate supervisory and support staff.
  • Manage revenue and expenses to meet financial objectives.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service at all times.
  • Perform additional duties as required.


Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Proven culinary skills in institutional, hotel, or restaurant settings, particularly in large-scale food production.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in culinary management.
  • Strong leadership capabilities along with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrated history of effectively managing costs and annual budgets.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in institutional management, nutrition, dietetics, or hotel and restaurant management, or equivalent education and experience.
