Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Transportation Specialist to join our team at Gaston County Schools. As a School Bus Operator, you will be responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, as well as on field trips. This is a critical role that requires attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely transport students to and from school and on field trips
  • Perform student counts and gather information concerning students and routes as required by the School and Transportation Department
  • Obey all traffic laws and observe all safety regulations for school buses
  • Maintain student discipline and report disciplinary matters to the proper authority
  • Keep assigned bus clean and maintain assigned schedule
  • Check bus prior to operation for mechanical problems/concerns and notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or schedule delay/lateness
  • Report all accidents, driving hazards, and other related incidents
  • Adhere to Bus Driver Agreement and follow Bus Driver's Handbook
  • Comply with all NC rules and regulations governing the safe operation of a school bus/passenger vehicle and Gaston County Schools' rules and regulations
  • Inspect the bus for occupants at the conclusion of each run and serve as a Bus Monitor post-accident
Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age with at least six (6) months of driving experience with a valid operator's license
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have or be willing to obtain the required commercial Driver's License (CDL) with 'P' and 'S' endorsements
  • Must have no STOP entry appearing on the driving record and successfully complete the classroom and road training course, if not licensed
  • Must possess the ability to work independently with minimum supervision once the job and route are learned and be willing to clean bus after students/passengers daily
  • Must have and maintain a good driving record and be safety conscious
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines and changing priorities. The Transportation Specialist must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 10 pounds constantly. The position also requires the ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and be able to climb steps multiple times daily.
