Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology Fellowship Opportunity

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Irvine is now accepting applications for a 1-year fellowship in GI and liver pathology, commencing in July 2026.
This fellowship provides comprehensive training in all aspects of GI, liver, pancreas, and biliary tract diseases, with opportunities for clinical research.
The GI service, which handles approximately 10,000 cases annually, encompasses a wide range of neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions, with a special emphasis on IBD, colon cancers, gastric dysplasia/carcinoma, celiac disease, and Barrett's esophagus.
The fellowship also includes active participation in the pancreas and liver pathology service, as well as exposure to cytopathologic specimens from EUS-guided aspirations of the GI and pancreato-biliary tracts.
The position offers an appointment as a Clinical Instructor in the department of pathology and is structured for graduated responsibility to the level of junior faculty with sign-out privileges.
Fellows will participate in the sign-out of GI and liver surgical and biopsy material, frozen sections, and consultation cases with four fellowship-trained GI/liver pathologists.
Additionally, the fellow may take on few weeks of call during the year as an acting attending on the Surgical Pathology service.
Active involvement in resident teaching and presenting at the weekly GI/liver tumor board meetings during the fellowship is also expected.
Funded research opportunities are available within the department, and fellows will be expected to present their research at national meetings.
