General Responsibilities

As a Pump Station Operator Trainee, you will be responsible for the operation of the pump station, ensuring that all functions are monitored effectively while assisting in the maintenance and repair of the station and its components. You will play a vital role in maintaining the security and safety of Birmingham Water Works facilities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitor and adjust operations of the pump station.
  • Control tank levels by starting and stopping pumps to optimize efficiency, calculating tank rise and fall based on flow and consumption data.
  • Observe and log readings of motor equipment, cooling water, oil levels, and packing water.
  • Identify and report issues, completing incident forms and notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Provide excellent customer service through effective communication.
  • Inspect and clean cooling water piping filters as necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the assigned plant area.
  • Assist in the maintenance of plant grounds.
  • Support raw water sampling and analysis efforts.
  • Monitor raw water conditions for any abnormalities, including odor, pH, and temperature.
  • Control valves and assist with inspections as required.
  • Collaborate with the Security department to uphold plant security and equipment integrity.
  • Assist with maintenance tasks at various facilities.
  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures while performing all tasks.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Education

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • A passing grade on the BWW Entrance Exam is mandatory.
  • A vessel license is required or must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Preferred: ADEM Grade I Certification.

Experience

One year of experience in water plant and/or pump station operations or maintenance is required. Knowledge in mechanics, electrical systems, plumbing, hydraulics, and welding is preferred. Basic computer skills are necessary.

Supervision

This position does not involve supervision of others.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods.
  • Capability to reach in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity is required for tasks such as using a keyboard.
  • Effective communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
  • Physical mobility is required.
  • Ability to swim is essential.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to high noise levels; work will be conducted indoors and outdoors, including extreme weather conditions.
  • Work in proximity to operating machinery, high voltage, and corrosive materials.
