Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Animal Behavior Specialist to join our team at the University of Pittsburgh. As a key member of our Division of Laboratory and Animal Resources, you will play a critical role in ensuring the psychological well-being of nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform behavioral assessments on new and existing acquisitions of nonhuman primates, utilizing your expertise to identify and address any behavioral issues.
  • Support our research program by promoting environmental enhancement and psychological well-being of nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species, in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians, managers, and supervisors to enhance the animal environment and provide veterinary support as needed.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote animal welfare and reduce stress in laboratory animal species.
  • Conduct regular observations and assessments of animal behavior, identifying any signs of distress or abnormal behavior.
  • Work closely with our animal care team to ensure the highest standards of animal care and welfare.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and detailed records of animal behavior, including observations, assessments, and interventions.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay up-to-date on best practices in animal behavior and welfare.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as animal behavior, psychology, or biology.
  • At least 1 year of experience in animal behavior or a related field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address behavioral issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to animal welfare and research excellence.
Working Conditions

This is a full-time regular position, working Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some holidays and weekends may be required. The successful candidate will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed, and work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
